Brief History

Qantas Airways is Australia’s largest airline and the most experienced airline in the world. It all began on 16 November 1920, when Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited (aka Qantas) was born. At first, the sole business was joy rides and charter flights.

In 1922, Qantas introduced its first scheduled mail and passenger flights. Three years later, in 1925, Qantas expanded its business by delivering its first air freight shipment of fresh butter and ice.

Fast forward to today, Qantas has transformed into a major international airline and one of the industry behemoths. In addition to transporting passengers and air freight, Qantas now boasts a number of subsidiaries and interests in various businesses—including travel and holiday operations.

Throughout its journey, Qantas has established itself as a model of excellence in safety, innovation, and customer service. It’s no wonder why Qantas has repeatedly earned its place as the safest airline in the world. A title held from 2014 to 2017, from 2019 to 2021 as well as 2023. Qantas is also in the world’s top 5 airlines, rubbing wings with Japan’s ANA All Nippon Airways, the UAE’s Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Qatar Airways.
