Brief History

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is the flag carrier of Singapore. Founded in 1947, it was called Malayan Airways Limited when Singapore was still a part of Malaysia.

After Singapore separated from Malaysia to become an independent state, Malaysian Airways Limited became Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) in 1966. It was one of the largest airlines in Southeast Asia.

In 1972, due to Singapore and Malaysian governments’ different needs and strategies, they decided to split MSA into Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Malaysian Airlines System (MAS).

Since then, Singapore Airlines has come a long way to more than just offering a seat and a bag of peanuts. Throughout its history, they have been at the forefront of innovation and have set many industry firsts such as

  • the first to give out free headsets for the inflight entertainment system and offer a choice of meals and drinks in Economy Class in the 70s
  • the first airline to send a Boeing 747-400 commercial flight from Singapore across the Pacific in 1989
  • the first commercial figure to be displayed at the world-famous waxwork museum, Madame Tussauds in 1993 in London
  • having the world’s widest First and Business Class seats which transform into fully-flat beds in 2006
  • received the world’s first Airbus A380 in 2007
  • and becomes the first airline to operate regularly scheduled international services to and from Canberra. It is also the first airline with flights between Canberra and Wellington.

Singapore Airlines is not just acknowledged by industry experts but also by travellers around the world. Therefore, they are not short in awards. Recently, they are considered

  • the Best Airline from Business Traveller Awards 2022 (Asia Pacific, UK)
  • the Best International Airline by Conde Nast Traveler (USA) Readers’ Choice Awards 2022
  • and the World’s Best Cabin Staff by Skytrax World Airline Awards 2022.
